Hippospongia communis (Lamarck, 1814), the common sponge or “horse sponge”, is the most widely fished species in the Mediterranean. It can be very large (several tens of cm in diameter). Its network of canals is the most “cavernous”, which gives it remarkable absorbency.
“EVERYTHING ON THE SPONGE” BY DR THIERRY PEREZ, RESEARCHER AT THE CNRS IN MARSEILLE
Sponges have been known and used since ancient times.
Toilet sponges represent only a very small part of the diversity of species now known in all the seas of the world. Sponges are also found in lakes and rivers.
Today, there are more than 8,000 known species of sponges in the world, and the Mediterranean Sea has about 10% of them. Sponges can be massive, spherical or tree-like, encrusting, of different thicknesses, and of all colours. The samespecies can vary in shape and colour depending on where it lives. It is said that sponges are PLASTIC, which means thattheir appearance can vary a lot, especially depending on the environment (lighting, hydrodynamics).
